Affiliate marketing, e-commerce, or freelancing: choosing a first project

By You Me and Money · November 1, 2026 · Original practical guide

Choose the work, not the headline

These models involve different daily tasks. Affiliate publishing means researching products and helping readers make decisions. E-commerce means managing products, suppliers, fulfilment and customer expectations. Freelancing means delivering a defined service to a client. None is automatically the fastest or easiest route to income. Start by describing which work you can do accurately and consistently.

Compare what you already have

List your relevant skills, equipment, existing audience, available hours, and maximum experiment budget. A person with a portfolio and a clear service may be able to test a freelance offer without building a store. A person with useful subject knowledge may prefer to publish a small guide. A retail idea needs a separate supplier and delivery plan.

Design one small experiment

For a freelance project, produce one sample and write a clear scope. For affiliate publishing, answer one real buying question and check the link and disclosure. For retail, compare supplier terms and sample economics before buying inventory. Define a date and a spending ceiling. A completed experiment should produce information even if it produces no sales.

Use evidence to choose the next step

Track responses, useful feedback, actual expenses, and time spent. Separate genuine purchase behaviour from compliments. Do not assume an outcome from a small sample will repeat. Continue when the work is useful and the economics make sense; revise or stop when the evidence does not support the original plan.

Stay in the loop
